Deep-fried butter is all the rage this September, thanks to the State Fair of Texas and its type-A desire to come up with something bigger, greasier and more death-defying every year.
We're a little backwards in California. We don't have deep-fried butter yet, and at the Los Angeles County Fair we're still feeding off the Texas fads of prior years.
The L.A. County Fair starts again this Saturday, a perfect opportunity to bury bathing suits in the sand and start stuffing our mouths. The country's biggest county fair is not about petting zoos for us, but the landscape of over 250 food booths that provide a pre-holiday excuse to eat food our doctors would not approve of.

On June 14 the Del Mar Fairgrounds will be electric with the sound of swirling rides, baaing sheep and the excited screams of gleeful children. The unmistakable fair scent of kettle corn, corn dogs and cotton candy will drift through the air as the San Diego County Fair opens with its "Summer of Sports" theme.

DEL MAR ---- When does a food venue become an attraction? According to the official program of the San Diego County Fair, when it weighs 27 tons, can cook more than 1,000 items simultaneously, and can lay claim as the biggest outdoor grill in the world, that's when.
San Diego's kick-off to summer, the San Diego County Fair runs Saturday, June 14 through Sunday, July 6 (the Fair will be closed two Mondays, June 16 and 23). The 2008 theme, "Summer of Sports", celebrates a wide variety of sports at all levels, from youth to professional.
